The Shire of Pingelly is pleased to announced that we have secured funding of $130,000 for Stage 2 of the All Ages Shared Path through the Department of Transport WA Bicycle Network Grants Program to be constructed in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 financial years. This path will connect in with the newly constructed path to service the North Eastern part of Pingelly, although the final alignment has not yet been determined.
This additional funding is welcomed as it will provide additional connections for our community to access the existing pathway and walk and cycle safely to the town centre, parks, Pingelly Health Centre, Pingelly Primary School and the PRACC. Providing infrastructure such as this will encourage outdoor activity—leading to improved physical and mental wellbeing and contribute to building a culture in the community where local people feel comfortable to walk or cycle around town instead of feeling obligated to drive.
This announcement further delivers on the Shire of Pingelly Community Strategic Plan 2020—2030 (Outcome 2.4.3) to ‘Provide parks and gardens which can be enjoyed by all, including easy to access, good quality and interesting play areas for children, recreation opportunities for young people, and appropriate pathways and seating for older people and those with disability.’
This pathway, shared between pedestrians and cyclists is an exciting addition to Pingelly’s existing network. This pathway accommodates all ages and abilities, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the great outdoors and can access services within our town.
In announcing this funding, the Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said "The McGowan Government is investing a record $265 million dollars in active transport infrastructure over the next four years to encourage Western Australians to explore the State on their bike or by foot. There are huge benefits to walking and riding for everyone, which is why the WA Government continues to add to its record funding of bike and pedestrian infrastructure through the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program."
As part of the development of the design and alignment, the Shire of Pingelly will further consult with our community and key stakeholders to ensure that this project is a success. This consultation is anticipated to commence in the 2022/2023 financial year.
