Seniors Lunch in the Park – E‑Bike Trial

Last Thursday’s Seniors Lunch in Memorial Park was a great success, combining good food, good company and the chance to try out a range of e‑bikes and trikes. Ebikers brought a trailer full of cycles for everyone to test, and WestCycle attended with helpful information and plenty of enthusiasm. The Exchange powered through around 30 pizzas on a very warm autumn day, while the Shire kept things cool with icy poles and a pleasant afternoon breeze.

The trial aimed to showcase affordable, accessible ways to get around town. With Pingelly only about 2 km from end to end, e‑bikes and trikes offer an appealing alternative to driving. Some attendees brought family members they thought could benefit, and even a few Shire staff had a go—imagining the possibility of cycling to work in the mornings.

Trikes were especially popular, and it was lovely to see residents arrive on their own that they already own. Ideas flowed about adding dog trailers or cargo trays for sewing machines and craft supplies, and several people expressed interest in purchasing their own as a more versatile option than a traditional gopher.

The Shire is currently purchasing three cycles for a community loan program, supporting Action 7.1.4 of the Pingelly Community Action Plan 2025/26: “Introduce an e‑bike loan program for local residents and businesses to re‑introduce people to cycling.” Guidelines for borrowing are being finalised, and more information will be shared soon.
